" Gear on lower shift shaft" confusing!
Most Mercs of memorable history use a cam/camfollower shift mechanism. Twisting the shift shaft rotates a cam with 3 detents, each of which is a different depth. This different depth causes the shift dog on the prop shaft to move into the F gear, sit in the center for N, or move to the rear for R.
To figure the gear, move the lever to one limit or the other...forget which way is which but it doesn't matter. With the shift shaft at one extreme, the prop will perform:
F is clicking in one direction and resistance in the other.
N is no resistance in either direction.
R is resistance in both directions once it locks in to the shift shuttle....slowly rotate the prop as you slowly rotate the shift shaft....forcing can damage the linkage.
Once you know what gear the lower unit is in, put your remote control in that gear and put her back together.
