I hope someone can help me after 4 hours of aggravation now 1st so you all know I have done an impeller twice already on this boat. So this is why I'm coming to you guys for help also , when I started up the boat last week I put it in forward any reverse and it was perfect I just wanted to make sure that nothing happened over the winter. So as have I done in the past I put the boat in forward I removed the 2 allen bolts and drooped the lower unit. I removed the old impeller and installed the new one

So as I started lining up to do the reinstall I made sure that the brass shaft lined up properly I made sure that the drop was in forward gear and after a few attempts pushed it up and it lined up perfectly. Now this is where the problem started I went to put it in and seem to be hard they said well I wonder if it's team we get in now with no and I didn't want to cause any damage. So I lowered the lower unit after removing all the nuts and tested the shifter back and forth with no problem. So this is where I start really getting confused I'm doing everything I made sure that the position was in full forward motion then the brass shifter arm or yoke was perfectly aligned again I spun the propel to know that I was definitely in forward gear but I could not put it into reverse. I also noticed and this is where may be an adjustment in play on the engine transmission. What I don't understand is when I put it in a forward position I checked everything before and it was pointing straight to the front of the boat along with the brass that moves when you push the throttle forward and backwards was also going straight so why is there suddenly a problem. I hope I explained it well enough.

I literally spent four hours order one hour job because I'm just baffled, and I've done this before

1989 3.7 i/o merc sorry about that I left the most important part out.whot o
I know how to adjust the cables >>> 6 inches make sure it's in forward , have some one hold the prop froward pressure then adjust the lower link 2 4 turns inwards or clockwise.
I am baffled on the fact that I cannot put it in reverse like it's jammed up.

You may be right. I was making sure the brass yoke or what ever its called was turned to the left under tension. That DUH would be reverse NOT FORWARD I AM SO STUPID . So I need to do is hold the prop counter clockwise make sure the brass is straight and I should be go. Thank you for reminding me. I may still do the adjustment because there is a clicking in neutral. .

Clicking in neutral means that clutch dog is not in the correct position.----Too close to forward or too close to reverse.
