Gear probs

I have recently installed new control box and cables on my Johnson v4 90 engine. Everything feels fine except when I put it in reverse it feels like its goin into reverse twice. ie: crunching into gear. I have taken it out and everything else seems fine goes forwards and reverse and neutral. would anyone know what this is or am I just being paranoid?
