Re: gear ratio 1974 50 hp

i have this motor running on a 17' winner from 1971 and by myself i get the rpms up to 5600 rpms or more depents on the chop.
if i put one more person in the boat plus a cooler with beverages the rpms drop to about 5000.
the prop is a 13 3/4 X 15 and im thinking of changing it to a 14 X 13.

any suggestions?

i dont want to burn the pistons or ruin this gearcase.

thanks

That motor really needs to be in the 6000 range with your average load to live and perform correctly.

Did you try raising the engine up higher out of the water? Better way for getting revs as I've learned. ;)

Do you have any speed information? GPS/Speedo?

the antiventilationplate is about 1 " above the bottem of the hull.
the speed is hard to say but i guess its between 25 and 30 mph.
but this is a wild gues.
i think if i change it to a 14X13 instead of the 13 3/4X15 i hope i will gain about 400 rpms that will bring the engine to 6000 and with more load to hophely 5500.
i think if thats what happens i will be happy.

i will let you know what happens.
i know this boat is heavy for this moter.
may be its asking to much.

i dont realy see 17 footers unless its a skiff with a 50 horse.
http://groups.msn.com/outboardpictures/shoebox.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=17

reeldutch
