gear slippage??

I own a 1994 Mariner 150 hp outboard. When I engage it in forward and increase the throttle, the gears appear to "skip" (as if there were a damaged gear tooth?). This may stop if I let up on the throttle and then increase the throttle again. There is no problem once I get to a slow cruising speed--only in startup. I need to have a dealer look at it, but would like to know what the problem may be and how better to describe it to the dealer.

I'd appreciate any insights you may have.

Re: gear slippage??

Sounds like a damaged or worn driveshaft pinion gear. If you have recently hit a rock with your prop you may have shed a tooth. Best evidence of gearbox trouble is to drop the oil and see what colour it is. If it looks like silver paint it definately needs looking at.

Best of luck..Keith B...

Re: gear slippage??

Most likely forward gear and/or clutch dog are worn. Caused by 'gentle' shifting.
