gearbox question

I am new to boating and i don't know what the deal is here. I have a 70 Johnson 85 HP model #85esl-70d. I got the motor fired up for the first time since I bought it. When pushing the throttle forward the motor revs up but the prop does not spin. Any ideas on what to adjust or what is up?

Re: gearbox question

Does your boat have the newer style single lever controls? I would have thought it has the old style with the separate lever for shifting. Anyways, if its the single lever, your cable could be broke, your control box could be broke, or way out of adjustment. You should be able to find the linkage under the cowl and manually put it in gear to at least rule out anything on that end. Good luck.

Re: gearbox question

I have two levers on mine. 1 is forward reverse and revs the engine, the second is run start. The cable seems super long. I don't know how to adjust it.

Re: gearbox question

Oh and it seems like I have to push the shifter forward a lot before anything moves

Re: gearbox question

You have an old engine and control box by the sounds of it.

Start the engine with control cables off the controls on the engine (throttle and shift). Manually shift the lever on the engine and see if you get good gear mesh by doing this. Notice if it is stiff or will not engage correctly. If it shifts ok, then I would suggest it is either the control box (set up of cables, stiffness, something worn) or it is the cable themselves, worn out.

Here is what I think but I could be wrong. there is no manual linkage that I can find at the control or the motor. I am pretty sure that it is electronic. the switch that you can see sitting in notch is the selector. When I flip the switch either way with the power on and the key in the run position there are no audible clicks or anything. Here are my questions. Am I correct in thinking this is electronic? how should it be wired? How do I test the switch? and where are the shifter solenoids? any help would be great.

Re: gearbox question

I'm sorry, I have no knowledge or experience with eclectic shift.

Re: gearbox question

Maybe the problem is simpler then I thought. After doing some reading I may have used the wrong oil. Is it true that I need a type C oil because of the electric shift?

Re: gearbox question

You need to use Type C oil which is now called Premium Blend and is available at Evinrude dealers.

Your motor has a hydraulically-shifted electrically-actuated gearcase. Unless the driveshaft is broken or something wrong inside the gearcase, it should always be in forward gear when the motor is not running.

For shifting to neutral, 12 volts has to be present at the green wire to activate the neutral solenoid inside the gearcase. For reverse, both the blue and the green wire need to have 12 volts. Too heavy an oil or a problem inside the hydraulic pump and linkage could keep it in neutral while the motor is running.

Re: gearbox question

OK.. I will check it out.. I am pretty sure I used to heavy an oil. I know on one of the wires (there are three) I have two purple striped wires. Is this correct? Thank you so much for the information! Do I need to have the motor running to check the wires or just the key switch in the run position?
