I am replacing the Gearcase Housing Assembly 396199:due to broken skeg and small (freeze?) crack on motor I bought recently. Motor was missing Rear Thrust Washer 324689. What gaskets/o-rings/ seals would I be well-advised to replace (in order of most important to least important)? Ex: Shift Rod O-ring 305242.... I will probably replace Impeller too, although it looks fine. Thanks in advance for input..

Have you already purchased the housing? You might consider buying an intact lower unit from a donor motor (may find it cheaper to find a complete motor).

Cheapest way is a factory seal kit.------I put 2 O-rings on the shift rod.-----Simply because big motors use 2 and there is room for 2 of them.----Install a new impeller.

Thanks for inputs. I already bought the housing, $47 including Shipping, not too pricey. I am giving myself a Christmas present!

I can't find a Factory Seal Kit, although I see chrome pump kit, water pump repair kit and anode kit. Got a p/n on the Factory Seal Kit?

See the parts list on this site or the BRP parts lits at http://epc.brp.com/Index.aspx?lang=E...7-6261bfdd0e44 because it is a lot easier to use and I dont lthink you will find a seal kit listed, only individual seals and gaskets etc.

I would replace all the seals ( although I don't think I have ever replaced the shift rod seal on mine, not for a long time anyway), the O ring on the bearing housing and the drain and level plug seals.

Inspect the other gaskets before reuse and replace if in doubt , especially the gearcase cover gasket.

Silly IMO to refit an old pump impeller , so replace that.

Consider removing the power head and replacing the water tube top grommet ( PITA on my '84 model) while you have the gearcase off.

Well, I think that the shift rod o-ring is a major factor in water getting into these housings.------Have a bunch of the propshaft bearing housings that are cracked due to freezing.----That is a flimsy part and no longer available new.-----Likely will get a call in the spring from another party looking for that housing.

Thanks all for the input. I will order the individual parts including Impeller and top water tube Grommet 330426. I don't see a kit on the BRP site either. Total price is only about $62. Including what I paid for the motor with leaking Gearcase I'll only have about $420 invested--not a great deal but not terrible either...

If you take the power head off and separate the inner exhaust tube from it to get to the water tube top grommet you will probably need a new powerhead to exhaust housing gasket

Vic, good point on the Powerhead-to-Exhaust Gasket. Geez, where does this project end? LOL

Racerone, can you please clarify by "flimsy part" whether you mean Propshaft Bearing Housing (Gearcase Housing Assembly 396199) or do you mean Shift Rod O-ring 305242 (which appears in Gearcase diagram) vs. Shift Rod Grommet 552360 (which is part of Midsection)? Both the O-ring and the Grommet seem critical for achieving a proper Gearcase seal. Also both parts are in limited supply--the Shift Rod Grommet is especially scarce (around $15 if you can even find one). OMC Shift Rod O-rings305242 are mostly Unavailable but Sierra makes O-ring 18-7118-9 which are available at a few suppliers. Please advise. Thanks.

The propshaft bearing housing is FLIMSY.-----It acts like a fuse when water in the gearcase freezes.-----Just take a look at the tabs for the screws and you will agree it is flimsy !!----552360 has nothing to do with keeping water out of this gearcase !----305242 is available at a dealer all day long at 77 cents CA.------???----where are you looking / shopping?

Racerone, you're right --the Housing looks flimsy, that is probably why this housing cracked for previous owner (he lives in the mountains of Pennsylvania and winter stored this motor in an unheated building without first changing/winterizing the Lower Unit). Also you're right about availability of O-Rings 305242 (my handwritten/ordering notes were misaligned/wrong). I see them available at 3 suppliers that I usually order from: MarineEngine, iBoats/Crowley and SeaWay.

Great news if the $15 Shift Rod Grommet 552360 is not really necessary. Is this because using 2 ShiftRod O-rings underneath/tight against Gearcase Cover 389837 does an adequate job of keeping water out of the Gearcase? Or do you put the 2nd (i.e. not shown or called for in diagram) O-ring above the Gearcase Cover? I like 77cent vs. $15 solutions...

Thanks for ongoing guidance.

??----When I pressure test a sealed gearcase that 552360 grommet is 4 miles away.----Therefor it is not needed to keep water out !!

Ok, got it. Thanks. BTW attached is a photo of the crack on original Gearcase Housing. Pretty flimsy...
