Hello, the past couple of weeks my shifting has been getting wacky in my 1987 Johnson 90 HP V4. It first started with it not shifting into reverse consistently. It would click (loudly) like it was trying to engage, but would not always go into gear. Sometimes it would and then would pop out. So I backed the cable off a little and that worked, but then it didn?t engage into forward until I was way up on the throttle and then jump into gear (not smooth).
So my last time out this past weekend it started jumping out of gear while in forward at speeds from 30+ down to 8 mph. It did this violently about once every minute or two and I headed right in.
I don?t think it?s the cable at all as they?re only 3 or 4 years old. I don?t think it?s the shift rod as it?s not bent at all and I can hand shift it fine into forward neutral and reverse. So my guess is it?s in the gear case.
I took out the lower unit and I?m about to take apart the gearcase and I?m hoping to see something out of wack when I open it up. I was wondering if this sounds at all familiar to anyone and if they might have any ideas in advance. I?ve had the gear case out and put back together an old Evenrude so I think I should be all set. I have the factory manual as well.
Ok, back to work, need to get her ready for fluke season?
Might as well replace all of the seals and water pump as well.
Thanks.
Mike
