I am having difficulty pinpointing the shift rod retaining screw on my 87 - 90 hp rude. I have a diagram from the maintenance manual but it's not helping me. I was hoping some of you here can shed some light on how to remove it so as I can proceed to remove the gearcase from the rest of the outboard

Thanks

Guy

Re: gearcase removal

use a 1/4 inch extention and swivel, it is back under the bottom carbs, come in to the side.

Re: gearcase removal

Actually on an 87 V4 there is no screw. There should be a pin on the starboard side - pull that and the linkage will push to the port side releasing the pin from the top of the shift shaft.

If you don't have that pin you may have an older model.

Re: gearcase removal

I got the lower unit off not problem. Shift rod linkage was easy as pie to take apart.

Thanks for the tip.

Re: gearcase removal

Anytime! Just make sure to set the shift rod height before putting it back on.
