Outboard is a 1968 3hp Evinrude
Can't seem to find the infinitive answer of the proper lower gear lube to use. Also there are two screws in bottom casing one above the other, one reads oil level the other drain. So do I drain from the bottom one and fill from the top? I"ve read somewhere some said fill from the bottom until it come out of the top the place bottom screw in, this procedure doesn't make sense.

Yes remove both screws and allow it to drain.

If there is any water in the oil (or if the oil is milky) you will need to investigate the cause.

You do fill via the bottom hole until oil flows from the top one. You do this by buying oil in a squeezable bottle with a nozzle that screws into the drain hole or by buying a pump that fits the drain hole.

When the oil reaches the top hole refit the screw using a new washer. Remove the bottle or pump and quickly refit the drain plug , again using a new washer.

Use Hi Vis outboard gear oil. (Around 85W 90EP ... if pushed but not recommended you can use an automotive EP 90 gear oil .. thats all that is specified for some makes I believe)

Use 80-90 marine gear lube in a tube. remove both srews and drain in a clean container to see condition of old lube(if it's milky or dirty then you have a bad seal to replace before going further). put lube tube point into lower drain hole and sqeeze tube until lube comes out of top hole, put top screw plug in and tighten, then remove lube tube and quickly replace lower screw plug before much fluid can leak out. Very easy job. Good Luck!

Make sure to replace the seal washers on the drain and fill screws.

Amen! They are not reusable and will leak water into the lower unit.

replace the seals on the plugs BRP part # 311598 or Sierra part # 184248, buy several of these, ( they are a one time use item)
