Gears Won't Work???

well we got the old '65 Evinrude 60 h.p. running like a charm, not a skip, as smooth as glass, however, when i put it into gear, i can only go so fast until the gear pops back into neutral. The linkage is fine (the linkage on side of engine, through the view hole), however i was thinking, is it my gears that are worn out???? I can hear them scrubbing, but not engaging, and she will run about mid speed, but when i hit it full throttle, it slips out of gear.......What seems to be the problem??

Your clutch dog and forward gear in the lower unit are worn out. A common and expensive problem. The dog is $103 and the gear is $307. Plus you will need seals and also it would be foolish not to upgrade it to snap shift detents while you are in there. + Labor.
