I am mounting a 1983 40hp merc on 18 ft steury which is in the water. I had to install newcables to control motor. The fuel cable aligned on the first time, but the shift cable has been a nightmare. Do I start with control box and engine both in neutral? I have done John /Evin and had no problem, but I cannot line this up. Both other times the boat was out of water, maybe Ill have to pull it. Am open to any suggestions. Rsnyder

Re: gearshift merc

You mean the throttle cable...

Attach to the shifter first. With the shift lever in Neutral, align the engine end with the mounting stud, then thread the adjustment barrel in or out to align with it's retaining hole. That's it...

Re: gearshift merc

Start with both in N and go from there. You may have a bit of a problem going in to gear without the engine running. In that case you will need to bump the prop to line up the dogs.

Also if the reverse locks are bent and not over the tilt pin you will need to remove the engine and straighten them out. Or you will have on heck of a time getting it to go in reverse. Actually not it won't go into reverse.
