Valvoline Outboard EP Gear Oil Part #VV555
Is this something that i can use in a 1970 85hp johnson motor that has the Hydro-electric shift. I know they say use the "Premium blend" Not Hi-Visc what they call "type c" can't find anything on the tube that states weather its hi-visc or what not.

Thanks

Re: Geart Oil Question.

It doesn't absolutely have to be Premium Blend or Type C. Older Selectrics are very specific. You basically just need a thinner gearlube than HiVis to shift. Most synthetics would qualify.

I'm with WBW on the Synthetic. Type C is just a low viscosity oil, which is needed in the electric shift. Do NOT run heavy Dino Gear lube. The new Syn gear oils of 80-90 run like 30w. But did ya try a Johnsonrude dealer? They have Type C

Re: Geart Oil Question.

Here is what Pennzoil says:

" APPLICATION PENNZOIL MARINE® OUTBOARD GEAR LUBE may be used in all outboard gear cases where an SAE 80W-90 API GL-4 gear lubricant or older Type C is specified.

Older models [prior to 1978] sometimes require special products. Check your owner's manual for any models over ten years old. Johnson and Evinrude models with electric shift (1972 and earlier) and pre-1977 OMC Stern Drive require Pennzoil ATF Automatic Transmission Fluid. "

Well if Premium Blend works, and works well, why are we looking for something else ? ?

this will probabley work anything heavy as

SAE 80W-90 API GL-4 gear lubricant . this will be to heavy as the Hydro-electric shift has a pump and can`t handle the heavy stuff
