We have an explosion in population. Are you guys seeing the same thing too or is it just an Indiana thing? Here in Indy, there so many of them that we're starting seeing geese roadkills. They would just walk, won't fly but walk across busy roads. They would walk all over the place like they own it and poop everywhere. Too bad they're not tasty and don't get hunt like duck.

Have that problem in Lake Tahoe. They don't migrate anymore and stay all year long. Too much food all through the winter so they just stay and congreagate. Doesn't help that people feed them and they don't have as many natural predators around.

We HAD that problem here, but they opened up the public use areas to geese hunting. If prepared right, they are a good eating bird ... daughter LOVES them.

Local parks and golf courses send trained dogs out to run the land before they open in the morning to clear the geese. We have year round residents clogging all open spaces now. Lotsa talk but no action yet.

Say thank you to the University of Syracuse,NY.
In the seventies they did experiments with geese to try and make them year round residents instead of migratory birds.
At their second try they were wildly successful.
Where I live we have volunteers addling the eggs.(Oiling them so they don't produce live young) and trained border collies who chase geese but do not kill them.We went down from hundreds of geese to a few dozen in about 6 years time, without ever hunting them or killing them in any other way.
It used to be that they were a novelty, now they are a polluting dirty bird that holds up traffic.

Rodents with wings!!!
They are everywhere in Michigan and there are very liberal hunting seasons on them.
I don't hunt them because I've never cooked a good tasting waterfowl, and I've tried about a dozen recipes.
Aspeck, you're gonna have to give up your secret someday!!:D

The Kansas City area is covered with the things. They even stop traffic on the Interstates as no one wants to get fined for killing a "protected" waterfowl. Our local hospital had a nesting pair for several years and every so often, one would get inside.

All one has to do is let cattails grow along the pond banks and they'll go away. But the cattails ruin the landscaping view.

St Louis.

Kill about 100 ducks a year, and see thousand of geese, kill few.

Migrators come from Canada and hook up with locals. Locals being those that hang around with the ones that live in your area on golf courses, lakes, etc.

Geese like deer have learned to live in the suburbs

Used to be that you would see them heading south in the fall and back in the spring. Not as much anymore here either.
