Gel Coat for Dummies

Can someone explain to me what Gel Coat is?

I understand that it has something to do with the fiberglass hull of my boat but what is it exactly?

OK, that helps. Now question number 2..

I have some "scratches" in my boat. They are not really scratches but places were something hit and rubbed. The boat is dark green in color but these places are almost white (or light green).

They don't feel very deep at all but there isn't any color there. There are a few places, the longest about 4 inches and 1/4" wide. I assume the gel coat has been removed.

How would these be repaired and apporximately what would it cost?
