I am wanting to Gel Coat my boat, is this a hard job? I am a very accomplished painter, so could I do this? What would be involved?

Re: Gel Coat

Is this a hard job?.. YES... Being a good painter would help, but the actual outcome depends mainly on alot of sanding both before and after the gelcoat is applied...

Gelcoat must go on thick (15-20 thousandths of an inch, or more) unlike most paints... Gelcoat can be applied by spray or it could be applied by roller or even brush, but spraying would be a better choice (less sanding later)...

A standard spray gun might do the job but you'll have to get a very large orifice for the nozle and you'll likely have to thin the gelcoat with acetone to get it through the gun... You'll also have to work very quickly because gelcoat can set up and turn your spray gun into a worthless piece of junk really fast..

After the gelcoat has been applied you will have to apply PVA (poly viynal alcohol) to cure the gelcoat before you start to wet sand and polish...

Now comes the really not fun part.. The, what will seem like; endless wet sanding to get it smooth because gelcoat is not self leveling and will be a bit lumpy and wavy..

Finally Buff it out...
