Gelcoat, anyone?

This past season I removed about twelve inches of gelcoat while doing battle with the wind and rocks. The damage was done to a strake along the forward portion of the hull and is visiable to me when the boat is on the trailer.
How easy is this to fix by myself or would it be bertter to have it done by a pro.
Thanks,
JAL

Re: Gelcoat, anyone?

drewpster, I really could understand your first reply better than your second and now after reading some other posts, I am really confused.
The hull of my boat is white and when we hit the rocks we scraped the strake for about twelve or so inches. The stuff that came off looked like white plastic as if some one took a jack knife and started to whittle on the strake. I removed the ragged stuff and then sanded the damaged area. Now it looks like a grey brown fiber glass color. It appears that whatever came off was about 1/8 inch thick.
Confusion reigns.

The link he posted goes to the iboats store....it shows gelcoat repair kits. What he is saying is...go buy one of these and follow the directions on it. Basically you just sand down the damaged area, wipe it down with acetone then apply the gelcoat.
