I am about to purchase a 1996 Sea Ray 175. The top sides of the boat have a light fading of the gealcoat. How can I remove this without paying a detailer to do this? The gealcoat condition on the sides and bottom is like new, but I would like to restore the the topside to the same conidtion.

Thanks,

Start with a rubbing compound, depending on how faded your gelcoat is get a compound that fits your gelcoats description.I use 3m heavy oxidation rubbing compound when the fading is severe.I have had great results with the 3m coumpouds, read wich one described your gelcoat best and you will know which rubbing compound to get (coarser for severe fading). After you rubbed the compund real good all around your top sides, get a clean cloth and rub it off using all your muscles.after your satisfie with the results put on a good boat polish (I prefer collonite) rub your polish and then remove again. Now step 3 is a good wax to protect all your hard work,I use collinite fleet wax, mguires flagship is also very good as are the 3m waxes but Ive had the best results using collonite, remove all the wax and have a beer enjoying that nice shine.Yes its hard work but you will have great results. good luck

As I've said many times on this forum...try the easy stuff first for about $12.00 - Marine Penetrol - wipe on, let dry for 10 minutes, buff off like car wax. If you're not satisfied, compound first, then use the Penetrol. Most are amazed with the results.
