Gelcoat... How do you know its getting thin?

Just curious... my boat is a 89' and who know how many times its been compounded/wetsanded. How do you know when your running out of room for compounding? Ive owned the boat for 5 years and compounded it 4 times... should I be getting close to the point of repainting?

I compounded my 83 sea ray every year heavily and never came close. I doubt you would ever have a problem. If you have any chips or dings anywhere you can get an idea of how thick the gel coat is.
