Anyone ever run into 23-25 gears? Nothing seems to match up, need to replace the complete upper, boat has twin 260’s so I’m reluctant to just slap on a “ v-8” upper. Customer says it’s 1988 but I don’t show a gen2 for that year ?

Ayuh,..... The Gen.II's didn't come out til '91,.... Donno what you've got,......

A V8 oughta be 1.50:1 ratio, unless an under-powered big boat, then the 1.65:1 gears are sometimes used,.....

Drive shaft housing gears (for both Alpha One and Gen II) can only be one of the following pairs. 17:19, 20:24, 20:22, 24:24... I suggest you may have counted wrong. And since a 'V8' ratio (1.50:1) uses 20-22 upper gears, and that equates to you being 3 teeth out on each, that sounds like it might be the one...

Have a serial number on that drive? (under the decal on the port side)

Thanks for checking in, I pulled the sticker off, no # found, the gears are waxed up so bad,it’s difficult to count,
the boats 30 miles away, I guess I have to make the run, hopefully I’ll find some #’s on the valve cover.
the customer says it’s a 88 or 89, your right,they didn’t make the gen2 back then.

A photo of the drive would even be helpful.

Yep, looks like a Gen II drive. I wonder if some bright soul has butchered the drive and bell housing of an Alpha One to 'make it fit'?

On those photos, I counted 24:24... But I could easily be wrong as the photos don't have a high enough contrast for me to be 100% certain. If it is 24:24, then the drive is 1.65:1...
