I am considering a tiller 1998 Evinrude 35hp 2stroke, 3cylinder engine, as part of a boat package. I don't have motor model number. Boat and motor have appearance of good care and easy use. Seller is third owner, seller had shop do some maintenance (repairs) that included "replace oil hoses." Seller is asking a premium over boat packages with similar functionality.

If I buy, will likely have it for many years, and do most maintenance myself. Boat is a 17' aluminum utility boat (400lbs) to be used for river/bay/lake fishing.

On the positive side, it has good weight to power ratio, and is an Evinrude. For the equivalent price, a 25HP 4stroke may be better for fishing use. I'm not real happy about maintaining three carburators, instead of one. I searched the forum for good or bad and found:
- oil pump problems, air leaks, recommendation is to disconnect pump
- oil pump spring migration problem
- power packs causing intermittent problems

What are general opinions on this motor, regarding quality and ease of use/maintenance? Is there another motor in that HP range (and approximate age/price) that is considered far better?

Thanks!

it is an excellant motor. being a 98 it would have the OMS, not VRO fuel system. which is much more reliable. adding seafoam to your fuel, keeps clean carbs clean.
