Re: generator check? help please

Check the voltage on the battery with the engine off then again with the engine running, it should be higher with the engine running and never sisconnect the battery while the engine is running.

Re: generator check? help please

That motor has a DC generator. As I understand the question, you want to know how to tell if the generator is ok. To bench test a DC generator:

1. Remove the belt so the shaft can turn freely.
2. Make sure the generator housing is grounded to the battery negative.
3. Ground the generator's field terminal (the small one).
4. Connect a jumper wire between the battery (+) and the generator's armature terminal (the large one). The generator should run slowly like a motor. If it does, it is working at this time. It says nothing about tomorrow. The brushes could be on their last go-around for instance.

Note: this test also polarizes the generator, so you don't have to repeat that later.

Note Note: Connecting it backwards to the battery will polarize it backwards. Be sure of your connections.

I know this thread is old, but if someone can help....

I did the above procedure and the generator moves about 1 degree of rotation and then stops each time I jump to A. Almost like a stepper motor.

To me that seems like a bad armature contact, but I don't want to open it up till im sure I have to.

Anyone know what this means?

Also if I test for resistance between the Field terminal and the case and/or the Armature terminal and the case should these be null or give resistance?

If you know the topic is old, why not start a new topic? This one is almost three years old and you will get better results from a new topic. Thanks.
