I apologize if this has been covered, but I didn't have any luck with the search feature.

I'm interested in buying a used boat that has 16,000 reverse air/heat. Problem is the boat does not have a generator and I intend to spend weekends at anchor. My question is whether a portable generator, such as a Honda 2000, would allow me to run the air or heat? A friend told me he was fairly sure the generator would not output enough power to run the reverse cycle air conditioner/heater.

Thanks in advance for any advice/help with this issue.

Re: Generator Questions

You need to do some detailed homework. This is only an educated guess, but a 16,000 BTU unit will draw about 2500/3000 watts, the genny is only good for 2000. You also need to factor in the startup draw.

I'm thinking that you may need a 3500w generator, especially on heat (cooling is less hungry for watts).

And welcome to iboats!!

Aldo
