Generator Shutdown

Hi, I have a Kohler generator on my boat. When I start it using the remote switch on the panel, it runs for 3 minutes then shuts down. If I start it in the engine bay, it will run indefinitely (or until the gas runs out). Has anyone had this problem? Any advise on trouble shooting? Thanks in advance.

Re: Generator Shutdown

Not too familiar with your setup, but sounds like a bad relay... I couldnt tell you more without a voltmeter and some troubleshooting.

Re: Generator Shutdown

The plot thickens. The generator starts using the remote start, but won't shut down. Only way to shut it down is by switching it off on the generator. I think the remote start system may be the problem. Time to read the manual. I'll troubleshoot a bit a provide a ore detailed description of my actions and the results. Thanks

Re: Generator Shutdown

If you post a schematic, we can probalby point you to the parts that would cause those particular symptoms.

I'll scan the schematic from the manual and post. It is a Kohler 5ECD. I am pretty good and undertaking most repair work, but electrical repairs are not my forte. I'd appreciate any help. Regards.

Re: Generator Shutdown

A little bit of trouble shooting here. First step, pull the P1 plug off the adc2100 controller at the generator and check pins 25 and 26 with a multi meter. There should be continuity between the two pins with the remote switch in "run" and no continuity with the remote switch off.

This step will isolate the problem to the remote panel or the controller.

Re: Generator Shutdown

Hi, thank you, I followed your suggestion that and there was a continuity problem. I then inspected the switch and discovered a loose connector, the actual pin on the switch had come loose. I secured it in position and the generator now starts and shuts down as well. Additional information for others with a similar problem: Four Winns has a combined manual for the 248,268,288,298,328 & 348, the manual has all the wiring diagrams for all the electrical installations, however it does not have the diagram for the Electrical Panel on the 288 which includes the generator switch. I sent Four Winns a message via their web-site interface and they mailed me the wiring diagram for the electrical panel and generator installation. This diagram specifies the type of switch and manufacturer, which was the missing piece of the puzzle in the event that I had to replace the switch. In my research I did find the the manual for the 318 shows a similar generator installation to the 288, which was helpful. However having the actual 288 diagram is very helpful. In fact with a piece of equipment that has a useful life of a few decades, it is critical that one has all the engineering information. I am impressed with Four Winns and my generator is working without spending a bucket full of money. Thank you Auger01! :)
