Working on a late 70s Mercruiser 165 equipped boat. Trim gauge dead. Original direct replacement unavailable. Are there generic aftermarket gauges that could be used to replace it?

yep .... if you are sure its the gauge and not the sender then measure the gauge and order another one the same size

Don't always assume because a gauge is dead that the gauge is at fault. Gauges need +12 volts, ground, a good sender and a good connection between the sender and the gauge in order to operate properly. A voltmeter is your friend here.

Make sure you order one for a Mercury as it operates in reverse from a OMC/Johnson/Evinrude. As Glenn said, make sure its not the sender. To check, disconnect the sense & 12 volt wires at the gauge and measure with an ohmmeter between sense wire and ground. Should go from 0 to about 300 ohms as trim is operated through its range. Much more common to have a defective sender or broken wire than gauge gone bad. Good luck.

Ayuh,.... The Senders go bad quite often, 'n the Senders have changed Alot over the years,...

But,... As far as I know, the gauges will work in place of each other, from the beginin', to current production...

Had already replaced the sender. It was broken, wiring from it to the transom was toast and it was generally crap. Had also checked continuity of the leads from front to rear and used the new sender to see if anything happened at that gauge. Gauge is just dead. Just didn't know how universal the replacements might be or if ranges from sending units varied a lot over the years. Thanks.
