Hi, Can someone tell me if I can install the internals from a 1988 50hp Gearcase in a late 70s gearcase? The cases look identical with the exception of the rectangular zinc anode above the trim tab on the 1988 the late 70s model does not have this rectangular zinc. Any help is appreciated. I gotta broken skeg on the 80s model.
Thanks Jim

Ya, go with the skeg gaurd, alot to go wrong wiht swapping internals, you get somehting to tight or too much tolerance and the lower will toast itself in short order so if a skeg is all it is get the gaurd or let it slid, an engine will run fine without one.

I ran an engine that had about an inch of skeg left and it ran fine turned, cpouldn't really tell it wan't there.

OMC's are not like a Merc as housings are precision machined, that why the only shimming is pinion height. As long as you use existing shaft, bearing and shims you can swap from case to case.

Thanks for the advice guys . I can get a replacement case for about 50 bucks and all the internals are getting moved over. So ill give it a whirl, Id rather have a solid case then have a skeg guard screwed on or have someone weld a replacement skeg on . This will also give me a opportunity to inspect the internals . Thanks Jim

On a different note ...What is different about the pistons for a J/E 50 hp from 1994 and up as opposed to prior to 1994? I notice the OMC Pn are different for the pistons and the rings but aftermarket piston and rings used the same parts for all years. ??? Any help I need a piston for a 1998 and want to know if I can use a piston from a earlier year (OEM) Are the rings interchangeable ? Thanks Jim

The difference is the 1998 50 is a 3 cylinder and piston skirt porting is different on some pistons. The ring difference is they use a 30? tapered top ring as did the 92-93 3 cylinders. The 1994 and up uses a 7? tamper on both rings.

Yes as long as its after 1994 and for a 3 cylinder motor and aftermarket is cheaper.
