Get seats recovered or new?

So my friend and I are redoing our boat interior. The boat is a 1977 glasply 17' closed bow. We are taking out the vinyl floor, seats, and everything that is covered in vinyl and redoing it. We are going to put in carpet with snaps so it can be removed. We are going to recover all the side peices our selves and either buy new seats or have ours recovered. So we have been given a quote of $400 to get ours done. The nice thing about that is that the seat boxes were made into the boat so the aluminum frames would just bolt right back on. The good thing about new seats is we could probably get them for the same price, but we would have to cut the old seat boxes out of the hull and put in new ones. Please give me some opinions or suggestions.

Thanks,
Brian

if the old seats were comfortable, and the frame still in good condition, you like them, i'd say recover. is your price from a marine source. if so get one from an Auto upolstery shop. i always find them cheaper.

Those seat boxes might be contributing to the rigidity of the boat hull, since they're a molded in item.

If it were me, I'd leave the seat bases alone and have the existing seats reupholstered. Or buy a sewing machine and try to reupholster them yourself.

Academy sports sells back to back seats with box for around $100.00EA But they may not look as good as the originals recovered. depends which you like better.

I bought some of the cheaper lounge seats for my boat and I am fairly displeased with the quality of them. So if yours are structurally sound I'd say reupholster.

I recovered my old seats. Look like new, and have the color scheme that I wanted which would have been impossible to find in a new seat.

Have a great day.

Ok I dropped my seats off to be redone now just have to pick the colors. We are going with grey carpet so I'm going to go pick that up and then I'm going to bring it down to the guys shop so we can match it up. I'm think going to have him do them two toned grey/blue/grey 3 big stripes I just want to make sure the grey matches the carpet. That is my idea so far but I would like to see some pictures of other seats the ones that are back to back and lay into a bench.

Thanks,
Brian

I do REALLY wish I'd switched the location of the gray and navy carpet. The navy on the floor shows way too much dirt. More photos in the link in my signature.
