Took out my 1985 85 h.p. Force engine on a 16' Bayliner today for the first time in two years. Everything ran fine for first 20 minutes and then lost power in the engine. When I limped it back to shore I discovered the top spark plug is not sparking. The wires running from the plug boot to the "black thing" are a little dried out, not terrible. I would guesss I need a new "black thing", is that correct, what is it called and how much do they run? The boat is OLD, but reliable up to now, don't want to invest a lot of money, but the season is short on Long Island and I would like to see the water again.

Any thoughts, is this is a DIY repair, I'm pretty handy and follow instructions well.

Thank you,

Mark

I believe the black thing you are looking at is am ignition coil. A bad one will not produce spark, before replacing make certain that those wires were not just loose.
