Getting ready to reinstall Merc 350 MAG

Hi all, after rebuilding my transom, I'm hoping to reinstall my 350 Mag engine this weekend (have my dad and brother coming to help; they're pretty handy wrenchers with automotive engines and such).

I've got the transom assembly (gimbal housing, inner transom plate) installed and I'm making all the connections/installations to it, like trim pump, Y-pipe, etc., in preparation for dropping in the motor. I have the manual, but I'm wondering if you have any tips or if there are any 'gotchas' that aren't obvious or well-documented in the manual for installation.

I just noticed that I hadn't replaced the O-ring where the Y-pipe attaches to the transom assembly, so that's been ordered. Any other commonly-missed things I should pay attention to?

Thanks,
Jim

Did you replace the motor mount bushings? I would while the engine is out...... Wheather you did or not, make sure the correct washers, bushings and rings are used on the motor mounts on the transom plate and they are installed in the correct sequence, per the Mercruiser manual (NOT a cheapie aftermarket manual). Otherwise, if installed incorrectly. you'll never get the engine to align w/ the drive / gimbal bearing.

Good time to clean the bilges and test bilge pump(s) and do anything you can't get at while engine is in. Do you have the hose connected to the oil pan to pump out the oil? If not, now is a good time to add one.

I did get a replacement set of the fiber washers and lockwashers for the rear engine mount on the transom plate. Is that what you're referring to? (The manual says to cement the fiber washers in place, but I didn't see any cement specified. Bellow adhesive?)

The other pieces for the rear mount looked good.

I'm just reinstalling the bilge pumps and depth finder transducer now. (The boat was gutted for a transom and deck replacement.) The pumps will definitely be checked.

I've been gone back and forth about the hose for the oil pan. I'm not sure if there's time to order one at this point. Do you have one on your boat?

Thanks!

Yes, those washers are what I was mentioning, and yes, I do have the hose on my oil pan.. Added it last year and makes changing oil on that Big Block soooooooooooooo much easier and not a drop of oil in the bilge. Best forty bux I spent, I think.

Those down the dip stick tube ones work, but are slower than death to use and don't get all the oil out, I believe.
