Getting Rid of the Pop-Up Whatchamacallit in Windows 8?

Just got a new laptop and this feature is driving me crazy. Seems like almost very time I move the cursor, a toolbar of sorts slides out from the right side of the screen. It's got icons for Settings, Devices, Start, Share, Search. At the same time, a big black box pops up on the lower part f the screen with date, time, battery life indicator and connection strength meter.

Anybody know how to disable this 'user enhancement'?

I've already installed a little utility called 'Classic Shell' to get me back to a UI I can comprehend (can you say 'dinosaur'?)

I get the same thing with my HP. The only time it happens is when I put the cursor in the upper or lower corner of the screen on the right side... Basically, the cursor has to disappear in the corner before I see the pop-up.... I like it since it allows me to access certain features quickly.... Not sure if it can be turned off...

Yeah, I know it's supposed to work that way (cursor in lower right corner), but mine pops up more randomly than that. I just want to dump or disable the thing. I don't need it.

Do a google search on disabling the windows 8 interface and you can also go into classic shell and change how 99% of that stuff functions.

I have been running classic shell for over a year now and love it. If you have classic shell install, go to programs>classic stat menu>start menu settings, this will bring up a box with a lot of tabs, you can go through the various tabs and customize the way you want things to work, such as disabling the corner pop ups.

I just installed Classic Shell. I'll look, but didn't see anything there to disable it.

Okay, I found it in shell's settings menu before I read your edited post, but it didn't work. Also tried editing the registry according to instructions I found elsewhere, and that didn't work either.

I mean, it did work to the extent that the 'Charms' (learned that's what it's called) doesn't pop up any longer when I move the cursor to the corner of the screen, bit it continues to pop up at random when I'm dragging the cursor across the screen via the touchpad.

I'm thinking now that the issue is in the touchpad driver or the pad itself. Back in the day, you had to calibrate the pad when you set up the machine, but that's no longer possible, at least not on this Toshiba. I'm stumped. Guess I'll need to contact Toshiba support. That oughta be fun (not). Think I'll wait a couple weeks. They'll be swamped with those who purchase on Black Friday.

Okay, I just found the advanced settings for the touchpad ('Mouse') in the Control Panel. Disabled Tapping and Enable Edge Swipes options. Seems to be working so far.

Thanks for letting me talk myself through this... :D

I'll post again later/tomorrow and let you all know if that did it.

I haven't seen the Charms menu since I disabled those functions on the touchpad, so it seems to have done the trick. I don't know why. Something funky about my particular touchpad or driver software, I guess.

(PS- like MTboatguy I love Classic Shell. Very easy to install and set up.)
