My last hobby was motorcycles for twenty years now its boats. I have started out with a 79 johnson 140 hp (140TL) seahorse can any one tell me how to get the most power one can get from this engine. Different reeds, carbs, pistons,rods,heads,etc... I am new at the outboards but trying to learn. What an expierence!!!

You might try checking out screamandfly.com, that's one of the most active sites for fast boat enthusiasts.

The 140 is about the most you're going to get out of that motor. The 140 is basically a ported, tuned exhaust, big carbed version of the 85hp - same bore & stroke, same pistons, same crank, same rods, etc.

How healthy is your motor in its present condition? Good compression? Properly propped to spin upwards of 5500-5800 RPM? What are you running it on? A 140 will shine better on a light performance hull than it will on a large, heavy hull.
