4.3 litre volvo penta with SX drive.

What does it normally cost to have a gimbal and u-joints replaced at a shop? Is this a long job?

Thanks!

Should cost about $300 with parts. It takes about 2 hrs for an expeienced guy. While in there make sure the impeller is replaced which is only $30 and no labor since its already taken apart.

You won't find an impeller inside a volvo drive....it's in the engine-driven raw water pump.

$300 sounds about right if there are no surprises....but be prepared for finding other little things that may need attention.

When a U-joint and gimbal bearing are replaced (for whatever reason), a whole lot of things need to be checked out. Do a search on this site and you will get some ideas...you will get to know your boat better...

Depending on the model you have, the Ujoints can be over $100 each (you have 2 of them) the gimbal bearing is around 75 bucks.
You have to remove the bearing carrier of the drive to change the ujoints. That requires more parts and getting the bearing preload reset.
The chances of getting all that done properly for $300 is all but impossible.
I'm curious as tkrfxr is about why you want to replace them. Usually the bearings don't fail unless water is in the bellows. Then you need bellows, and more work.

SX-M drives don't need the carrier removed for u-joint replacement.

Boat at the dealer. They are gonna take the outdrive off and check everything out. Sounds like it could be u-joint that is bad, but if they have it all apart, hope they do the gimbal too.

If the gimbal bearing and u-joints are bad its most likely due to water in them ---- I would sure want to take a look at the yoke and seal.
Good Luck Muc
