What are you guys using to install your gimbal bearings. I know not everyone has the actual tool.... Last time I tried to use a oil filter socket that was about the right diameter but ended up busting right through it. I am going to be installing another gimbal bearing in the next week and would like it to go much easier than last time. Let me know of anything you have done that worked succesfully. I don't have access to a welder though... Thanks!

you really need the right tool or the abilty to make one thats pretty close

It needs to only push on the outer caseing and stay centered , one bad hit and its JUNK :(

tommays

When i went to autozone to rent the 3 jaw puller to remove the old one i took the new one and matched up some sort of driver. It worked great. It was sort of like socket. Dont remember what i was called but it put all the load on the edges and not on the center part.

later,

Big-E

Big E, Do you meant they had a tool there that they rent that matched up? Or was it something they sell? Do you know what its "real" use was for?

It was something they rented to me. I was told it some sort of driver. The guys at my autozone aren't the most mechinal oriented group of fellows. I gave him my new gimble bearing , he went out back and came back with the driver. I asked him the name and he just said (some sort of driver) Sorry i dont have more helpfull info.

You may have to go down to the store and have them see if they have it.

later,

Big-E

You need a drive that contacts the outside ring of the bearing, not the inner ring. If you pound on that inner ring you will damage the bearing.

The tool for that job pushes on the outer ring, but centers on the inner part of the bearing so you don't slide off the side and damage the shield.

I once read that a piece of 3" PVC pipe will do in a pinch. Never tried it though.

in liue of the correct tool I use an 18" 3/4dia brass drift and work it in bieng careful to only hit the carrier.
no0tr that I would ever be out without the correct tool or anything.
this method wont work with the xdp drives.

Rodbolt, you mean you it it at like 0, then 180, then 90, and then 270 degrees just working it in a little at a time?

eggzacary,
its slow but if your careful it works.if ya miss you can trash the bearing. it works better if you lightly taper the end of the bar thats against the carrier.

Re: Gimbal Bearing Installation Tool??

Probably shouldn't of done it but, I used the old bearing collar and a hard rubber mallet. Lined it up with the new and smacked her in. $42.00 seemed a little steep for a tool I'll only use every once in a great while- hopefully!

I used my brass drifts too - Lotsa grease around then wipe it clean after in case any brass shards fly off the drift...

Re: Gimbal Bearing Installation Tool??

If you plan on checking loan-a-tools at AutoZoo, try the ball joint press. It usually contains a few different sized colars close to the 3" PVC size mentioned.
HTH
Tom

Ball joint press may have been what i used. It pushed on the outside and never touched the inside bearing itself. Worked like a charm.

later,

Big-E
