Gimbal bearing seal

Hi, I have twin 1985 Mercruiser 260 motors with Alpha 1 drives.

I am replacing the Gimbal bearings. My question is which way does the seal face that goes before the gimbal bearing. I cant tell on mine because one came out with the flat side towards the aft and the other was opposite..

The lip (garter spring) should point toward the bearing, but it really doesn't matter much because the seal does very little, it basically keeps gimbal bearing grease out of the engine compartment.
