I just bought a 2005 Chaparral 190 SSI with a 3.0 Volvo Penta. Engine GLP-C. Drive SX-M 2.18

What is the correct gimbal bearing # ?

What type of oil to service the drive? and where to buy ?

I just bought a alignment tool from ebay (3851083) and a service manual so I should have less questions.

Thanks

I believe the part no for the gimbal is 21752712. Need to confirm from dealer. Spec on gear oil for the drive is 75W 90 full synthetic oil with no limited slip additive. I get the Volvo gear oil from volvopentastore com.

Thanks HalfFish. I am new to Volvo Penta's. How do I find closest dealer? Is there a website?

When replacing the Gimbal Bearing, is there anything else I should change/check? I am going to check Bellow's.

99.9% of gimbal bearings go bad due to engine not in alignment or water in the bellows.

Austen, I would simply google a dealer, call them, tell them your drive serial no and ask what the gimbal serial no is? Once you take off the outdrive, you will be immediately be able to tell if there has been water in the ujoint bellow as it will be trapped inside. Also, the ujoints tend to rust. You will need to at least replace the two orings on the input shaft of the drive, and the oblong oring around water intake. The alignment task can be challenging at if you have another person to help it makes things go much smother. Ask if you need anything else.

If you search in the Volvo Penta Section of the forum there is a step by step with pictures someone posted on how to change the gimble bearing in your SX outdrive. They are pretty much the same as mine is the 1.97. I just replaced mine it was really easy. With the help of others on here and some searching i was able to get all the parts from Iboats. I got a Sierra greasable bearing, OEM Volvo Bellows and all the seals, orings from this site as well. Since the Forum update I am not able to locate the posts right now but will if I find them again.

Great Thank you everyone for the help. I am sure I will be back with more questions when I get the gimbal bearing started.

I just replaced mine on my SX-M 1.97 some of these part #'s may be different but will give you an Idea of what you need. The Volvo Gimble bearing # 21752712 is the same as the Sierra one below according to iboats website and was the same as the one I replaced.

Gimble Bearing for this is Sierra 18-2100, It is the greasable bearing. http://www.iboats.com/Volvo-Penta-Gi...view_id.269488

I also ordered and replaced the Seal that is in front of the gimble bearing, but it is a MOFO to get out just to let you know.
http://www.iboats.com/Oil-Seal-Sierr...view_id.222058

Ordered all parts here on iboats.com very fast shipping.

Replace bellows with OEM Volvo Part # 3841481- I have heard to use the OEM Bellows versus the aftermarket ones, just what I've heard?

Also replace the oblong water intake seal 3852560 when you pull off your drive.

Drive shaft Orings 2 ea-Volvo Part# 3852565 or Sierra Part #18-7153

You will need a 3 jaw puller to get the bearing out and an Alignment tool as well to make sure you line up the engine with the Gimble bearing once installed. If you search in the Sticky's in the Volvo penta area it shows you the specs for both tools.
