(1979 Mercruiser 228) I looked up the part on a drawing and the drawing shows a flat, gasket in the shape of the gimbal housing. The part #6533A1 matches up with a seal that looks black and unshaped, in a loop. Does this sound correct?
Is anyone familiar with this seal/gasket and how it is applied? When I looked up the gimbal housing install in Merc manual #4 it does not even mention a gasket.

thanks

there are only 2 that I know, the flat cork gasket and the round sponge rubber one. spray adhesive, contact cement, bellows adhesive.

The number one drives used a solid cork gasket in between the transom and the ring. The later alphas use a rubber gasket than fits into a channel on the housing. There are two different sizes of the cork gasket, so measure accordingly.

If you are using the rubber round gasket, be sure to have a few extra hands available, as it is nearly impossible to get the gasket to sit in place. When I did mine this year, I needed myself and 3 other people. one in the boat and 3 on the outside, which used thin plastic putty knives to keep the gasket in place.

when I looked at the gimbal housing.....there is a rubber gasket, all flattened of course, that rides in a groove.
