Greetings. Re: 2009 Volvo Penta 5.0GXI, with DPS-A 1.95 drive. I could not find anything on how to remove the Gimbal Ring Assembly, specifically the lower pivot hinge pin. Problem: I have the Volvo manual AC 2(2) #7746477 Sterndrive and Transom. So far I removed the cotter pin, used PB blaster, and then attempted to hammer out the pin by hitting it on the top, but it does not move. I am thinking the slot located in the pin is only for turning to align cotter pin hole, after greasing and re-install (can't turn now at all). See the pics and please provide any suggestions and comments.

I`ve got the same drive and will be attempting to remove mine this weekend to replace the gimbal and bellows. I check my manual an ddo not see where it calls for any special tool to get this pivot pin out. I`m guessing that it may just be slightly corroded and stuck. Can you turn it with a screwdriver from th ebottom slot? If so, you might be able to get it losed up and be able to drive it out.

Thanks for the reply BRICH1260. Correct, no special tools needed, removal should be simple, but as usual repairs and fixes never are. I can't even budge the slot screw, i'll keep thinking and hopefully will get it out in the end. Good luck on your outdrive, if you can remove the pivot housing only without the bolt heads breaking off, your exhaust and ujoint bellows r/r is better...though some say they have success drive removed only.

You might try driving the pin from the bottom up as you might be able to get a little more hammer swing on it. I think it is a non tapered cylinder and should move up as easily as it will down.

Also might try to carefully heat it up a bit.

Hello BRICH1260, sorry for the late reply, was out of town. In response to both of your earlier replies I agree the pin can be removed from top or bottom (talked with Volvo Tech Help), and using a little heat will also be helpful - no special tool required. I have not mushroomed the pin, so that is not a concern. The reason the pin is difficult to come out is because the pin is enclosed in a plastic type bushing making it an extremely tight fit (as was the case with the trim cylinders, but I had more room). Also hammering swing room from the top or bottom is not good; unless I remove the swim platform and use an appropriate long bar to knock the pin out from top. I could go the extra distance to remove the swim platform, heat it up, etc, but I will leave as is, and just find a different way to remove the two rear broken pivot housing bolts. Really not a big deal, except I will have to find a new location or tap into the broken head head bolt on the rear right to reattach the ground wire to the pivot housing. Otherwise the job has been easy, just the simple hard things sometimes. Hope you got yours done.

Pin up . If you cant turn it at all now you most likely have mushroomed the pin. Repair manual says you will need a special tool to remove pivot pins.

Use special tool 3849647 to press out the gimbal ring steering
pivot bushing.

What are you trying to do that you need to remove the gimble ring?

Greetings Thalasso, Thanks a bunch for the reply, been out of town. In regards to your help, I have not mushroomed the pin, it was non-turnable from the start. Originally I was only removing the pivot housing from the gimbal ring for better access to change my bellows, but both pivot housing (bushing securing) rear side bolt heads on the left and right (right side holds ground wire) broke off. Afterwards requiring me to remove (for drill out and tap, not disassemble) the Gimbal Ring Pivot Housing as a complete assembly to fix the problem. (see my reply to BRICH1260 above).

I was able to tap my pin out relatively easy. In fact my project went well( gimble bearing, bellows replacement) all except the ground strap bolt head sheared off on the inside of the gimble ring . Aggrivating. You can bet I put a good layer of grease on my pin when I reinstalled for next time. Best of luck with your project.

Hello BRCH1260,
Good to hear you got everything back together without problems other than the broken bolt head. As I mentioned I was out of town, so had not finished, waiting on parts and engine alignment tool; but hopefully will not have problems reassembling once I get parts and tool. Questions:
1. Are you indicating that you decided to remove the Gimbal Ring Pivot Housing Assembly?
2. Lower Gimbal Pin - Exactly what and how did you knock the pin out (details)
3. Broken Bolt Head - How did you remove the remaining bolt (drilled out, etc).
4. General - Do you have any tips, tidbits, etc that can make the process easy?:
a) Putting new ujoint and exhaust bellows back on (strethcing required?, adhesive optional, etc?
b) Outdrive Reinstall: Lining up the drive splines and pushing in to re-install, etc?

Yes, I removed the Gimbal housing ring by unscrewing the two 10mm hex bolts and tapping out the lower vertical pivot pin.I was able to remove the large cotter pin and tap downward the pivot pin. Access to the pin was made easier by removing both bellows. They had earlier been removed as I knew they were going to be replaced, so I basically cut them out. I tapped the pin out with a ball peen hammer, it came out fairly easy.I have done nothing with the grounding strap bolt yet, may wait until next off season before I decide how to get it out.The new drive bellows was kind of a bear to get inside the pivot husing hole, but can be done. The new model of bellows is not as flexible as the old, made of more a hard plastic than a rubber, but just keep working it. I attached the front hose clamp end first, wanted to make sure that I got a good seal there. The rear of the exaust bellows took a little persuading also, but I got it over the flange and got it tightned down. Greasing up the rear of the drive bellows and the nose of the lower unit that slides into it, along with liberal amounts of spline grease helped things go back together fairly easy. two sets of hands would have been nice , but it can be done by yourself.
