this is a don s copy and paste-my question-do i bump or tap with a brass hammer, deadblow or just with my fist?

The first thing you should have done is to align the inner part of the gimbal bearing to the coupler. This is done with the alignment bar by moving the inside of the bearing around till it lines up with the coupler.
With the alignment bar (no splines on it BTW) partially in the coupler, you bump the handle of the alignment bar up and down, side to side. This sets the gimbal bearing. From there you adjust the engine to fit.
Very hard if not impossible to do with a splined shaft.

I did not have to move the bar at all. It was all done with the front Engine mounts. If you check my youtube page you will see what is like when you are wrong and when you have it right.

Hello all, new to your site but old at boats. I just finished replacing used leg on my 190 Sunbird, align the motor till she falls in. 2 years ago I pulled the leg, rebuilt and fought to reinstall, things move over time. It took less than 3/4 turn to make her fall into place and had I done it in the first place I would not have had to replace the leg :(

You can simply use the heel of your hand to bump the alignment bar in 90 degree increments to set the gimbal bearing. A good hit with your hand - or a medium tap / hit with a mallet. You aren't trying to bend or break anything, just setting the bearing in place. THEN you can do the alignment of the engine.
