I've been looking for this grease fitting for the gimble bearing and didn't realize it was on the exterior of the transom.. Anyway now that I seem to have found it would it be better to pump some grease into it while the engine was running or with it shut off???

i'd think shut off. i don't remember reading anything in the serivce manual that says run it and grease it. it just says grease it.... i did roll the brg. with my hand and grease it when i could touch it during servicing (drive removed).... but when it's together. unless this thread bring new light to the subject. i'm gonna continue to grease it stationary....

It won't hurt anything to do it that way, but it sure makes a mess.
When the drive is off, I like to pump the grease into the bearing till all the old grease comes out, turn the bearing by hand a little , do it some more, till you get all around the bearing.
Then you can clean up all the excess grease so it doesn't get spread all over everthing.
