Gimble Bearing (Mercruiser 1985 MR model)

I am changing the gimble bearing on my outdrive, and I am wondering which way the gimble bearing seal goes in, or if there is a special tool for installation. I ordered a complete bearing kit, but it did not come with a seal. I am sure that it was a mistake that the kit did not come with a seal. Any ideas??

Gimle bearings dont come with seals. usually that seal doesn't get replaced unless the rubber part of the seal is missing. It's just a dust seal, not to keep out water or keep oil in or anything like that.
Look at the stickies at the top of this forum. There are free manual downloads available for you drive (#6) that shows how everything comes apart and goes together.

be aware that the new merc bearing kits are eliminating the grease fitting for the gimbal bearing.
follow the instructions with your kit.aftermarket stuff so far still seems to have the hole in the bearing carrier.

I just replaced my gimble bearing in my boat. its a 91 mariah with mercruiser. I had a heck of a time with mine. If you have any specific questions let me know, i just did this. Like Don S. said, there is no seal, its all one piece. in a perfect world the bearing will come out with a 3 prong slide hammer that u can get for free at auto zone. if not, u have to make a homemade puller which I had to do. goodluck.

Iam trying to locate a gimbal bearing seal for my alfa one 3.0,The origanal is 80 dollars is there a cheaper one that can be used like one that can be purchased at a auto parts place?

not sure what u mean by seal ? it should be one piece ? are u refering to the aluminium piece along the exerior of the bearing ?
