Lol, ok my outdrive is black but you get the idea. 1988 OMC Cobra.

I have a question (ok, YET another question). I was playing around with my alignment tool and I noticed that when the tool is in the gimble bearing, it spins very very smoothly, however I can move the end of the tool up and down, the center of the bearing seems to pivot. Is this normal? It 'feels' as if it's by design, it's very smooth, and there is no sign to me that the bearing is in trouble, no roughness, plenty of grease, etc. It is not loose, if I leave the tool hanging the bearing supports it, but if I move the tool up or down it moves, and stays where you put it. I hope I'm explaining this well.

Thanks (again!)

Re: Gimble Bearing Question

normal for inner race of bearing to move, that is the "gimbal" part. this is also why you need the tool. it goes into the engine coupler splines and thru the bearing to align these two items. these bearings are like spark plugs in that they are set at the factory and may not be correct for your application. the alignment must be set for your engine and outdrive to fit up.

Thank the lord! At least that's one thing I won't have to change out! Now back to my stuck outdrive shift shaft.... (see my other post about that (Title= Big Problem!) if you think you can help!)

Thanks again!
