My manual isn't real clear on this. All I have is the outer race. I was thinking of using a pulley puller but that wouldn't work. This is on a 1991 OMC Cobra outdrive and no I don't have the OMC tool. Anybody got any ideas?

If the bearing came apart, and only the outer race is left, you will need at least a three jaw puller.I prefer one with a threaded rod as opposed to a slide hammer.

The only three jaw pullers I have seen need something in the middle to press against though. Should I insert somethng like a steel rod all the way against the coupler and press against that? What would I do if the whole bearing was left?

you need a three jaw puller that you can insert into the bearing then expand the jaws to grab the bearing. The puller needs a long threaded shaft so you can block it on the back of the gimbel housing and draw the bearing back towards you.

I don't see what your saying I am going to block it on. THe puller I have does have a long threaded shaft but there is nothing to push against except if I went far enough in and hit the flywheel.
