Gimble Bearing vs. U-joint Noise

Hey guys,

I have a very similar issue to many that have posted, and was curious to know if there is a discernible noise difference to tell weather my U-joints might be bad.

Long story short - when I bought the boat (4.3 merc/Alpha 1 Gen 1) I noticed the driveshaft bellows was ripped, so I pulled the drive and replaced the bellows. While I had it apart I greased the gimble bearing, U-joints, etc.

I notice the noise when I turn, (sounds like a bad CV joint on a front wheel drive car) and when the motor is trimmed all the way down, thinking for sure the Gimble bearing needs replaced (and will be next spring). But, is there a test to really know if the U-joints are shot? I can only guess that they've had water in there as well, so, the odds are good, but, just trying to get some input on that one before they go on the list to replace in the spring.

Thanks!

I been watching this thread.. Shame no one has replied.. I am changing both u-joints and gimble for leaking bellows.. That what I got recommended from this forum..

U-joints can be checked. They must be smooth and tight with no sideways play at the yokes and joints. If there is any question just change them, you will already be in there. I know it's added cost but don't you want the peace of mind to know everything is good? Err on the side of caution with mechanical things that float!

Right?? I try to carry anything I may need out there.. Just last week a old relay I kept in the lock box helped me get the trim running again..

Changing mine.. I hate breakdowns.. Seems like complete u joint or gimble failure would just be catastrophic... Not only are ya dead in the water but that shaft would tear some stuff up PDQ at WOT:eek:

Mainly gimble bearings tends to make a grinding noise when turning/trimming.
Defective u-joints often starts to knock in addition to grinding and un-ballance.

Ayuh,... Bad gimbel bearings tend to Grind, or rumble...
Bad U-joints tend to Click, or grind...

I'm guessin' you need Both of 'em...
