right before and right after a gimble bearing goes south while on a nice morning run? Could the engine run/sound fine at hull speed but not under heavy load? When putting on the trailer and I turn hard (both ways) I would hear a 'rumble'?

Just like the DR. Said about the noise. If every thing is right it is normal to hear a small amount of noise when turning the drive all the way in either direction and tilted slightly especially when on the trailer. If your universal joints are worn they will make some noise when turning under a load. You will see grooves on the trunion shafts. A gimbal bearing makes noise all the time when they are in bad shape.

Ayuh,.... When ya pull the drive, stick yer fingers right in that greasy hole, 'n turn the bearin',....

If it feels butter Smooth,..... Replace the u-joints, they're worn abit,....

If it feels gritty, change it,...
