HI folks,
Interested in talking with anyone with mercruiser 898 out drive experience. I have a 79 Webbcraft and I am changing out the bellows, U-joins, impeller, and gimble bearing.
I am concerned as the gimble bearing that I received is not the same and the one coming out of the boat. Could the parts people have sent me the wrong one, or do take parts off of the old one? Confused amateur

Re: gimble bearing

The bearing was improved about 10 years ago, if the directions did not come concerning placement
of the bearing let us know. :)

Re: gimble bearing

The bearings themselves look the same, but it looks like there is a housing around the bearings. The bearing came in a kit, and has the numbers BBY-5536

Re: gimble bearing

I also looked at another posting which stated that the bellows replacement and water hose replacement is really difficult without a special tool. Is this true?

I did something very similar to you, bought the u-joint bellow, exhaust bellows, gimbal bearing shift cable bellows, and a myriad of other parts. Went to work pulling everything off, and then dragged her to the shop to get the guys there to put everything back on. $500 later and I am one HAPPY HAPPY man.

Re: gimble bearing

Bondo,
You are so correct. I finally got fed up with being nice to this contrary Gimble bearing. Using a large vice (might have been smarter to use another vice like alcohol, say Jack Daniels) I beat the living daylights out of the thing. Only one blow to the fingers, but the tennis elbow is going to require the latter vice to mend. Thanks for your advice. I have removed the gimble found a nice bunch of rust, and glad I did not run the boat in the poor condition it was in. I think it might have self destructed upon reaching operating speed.

Re: gimble bearing

I did mine for the first time, about a month ago. Took me a whole day mainly because I didn't put the bellows back on in the correct order and couldn't tighten one of the bellow's clamp, and had to redo it. Also I had the whole assembly off the boat and still a pain.

With that said the bellows and gimbal bearing costed under two hundred dollars, add one day to change them and money well spent.
