Hitting something in the water , defective casting
I think its the transom housing ,steering ring looks intact but the lower pin is gone

Uh-Oh  . . .

Break Out Another Thousand $,$$$

That could have been from a prior mishap. It is the gimbal housing . . . Cost is approx $1,200 for the part; Labor may be similar $$$. Perhaps could be repaired by a good welder/machine shop for less.

Sucks its not a gen II, I got one I would have sold you on the down low although its not perfect either.

That could have been a under lying problem since it broke where the cotter pin goes through. You could have hit something a long time ago and it just now rear its head.

And when tpenfield said good welder/machine shop, Im sure he meant a GOOD welder, not your local farmer.

Its either cast aluminum or perhaps cast iron (doubt it tho). Which means a PITA to weld, although it can be done with the right tools and the right person. Most people wont touch it tho, and the ones that will, more than likely will mess it up. But hey, it aint no use to you as it is now. You cant break whats already broke.

Best of luck to you.

would a good used one be ok or do i have to get a new one

if i have to go new it will be a while before i can afford the parts
i will be doing the work myself so labor wont cost me

i just replaced all my bellows so i should be able to reuse them
i will be using a new bearing either way

is there anything else i will need to do this job

A good used one will cost you $100-$200. You'll need a new transom seal to go along with it.

The engine has to come out to replace it, so you'll need whatever tools it takes you to get the engine out of the boat to do the job.

Re: gimble housing problem

Ideally, you need to take it out completely. Not to give you any unsafe ideas, but a ballsy man could take it off with the motor slightly out of the way. It would have to be picked up enough to get the weight off the rear motor mounts and then unbolt the gimbal housing from the inside. Then its just a matter of getting all of the misc. stuff off and out of the way.

It can be done, just a matter of doing it.

Also if you dont have a whole lot of room around the motor itself, then I would expect you not being able to do it regardless. Unless your a little squirelly guy that can fit in those little spaces. ;) Best of luck!
