Glaspar steering problem

I got a 1973 Glaspar boat. Took it out and everything worked fine. Took it on vacation to a lake and when we got up to high speed it would not turn left. When we slowed down it would turn. It got worse as the week went on, till the steering wheel spun around and it would not turn at all. Until then when I turned the wheel it was easy. Under the console there is a metal tube to which the steering cable comes into, that crosses with a metal tube that the steering wheel is hooked up to. There is a nut and spring at the back of the tube that the steering wheel is hooked up to. I am assuming (yes I know) that I have a rack and pinion steering. How do I take off the steering wheel to look to see what's happening? I popped off the cover and took off the nut, but it won't budge. Don't want to break anything that I don't have to.

thanks alot.

Re: Glaspar steering problem

Loosen the nut a bit and then take a whack at it with a hammer while pulling on the wheel. Should pop right off.
