Glastron Bal Harbour 225with OMC 5,8 :long shaft or shortshaft Sterndrive?

Dear Friends,we have a Glastron Bal Harbour 77 with 5,8 OMC.One Question that we have during our Problems is:Has it usually a long shaft sterndrive or a short shaft sterndrive? Where can i see some Pictures about that?<br /><br />Thanks for helping

No such thing as a long or short shaft sterndrive, that is a term used in outboards. <br />The length is determined (on an outboard) from the transom bracket to the cavitation plate.<br />The long shaft would be used for transoms that have higher transoms measured from the keel to the top of the transom.<br />In stern drives, a large hole is cut through the transom at a requiered height.

Sorry Don,but in my OMC Manual for 1977 were two length for the OMC Sterndrive:One around 86cm and the other around 96cm.We now have a 86cm long Sterndrive and some People say it has to be a 96cm long Sterndrive,because the V8 has only the long one.I dont know if its true,and that is the Problem.If we have a too short Sterndrive,the prop will probably get Air in Curves.

Could you be talking about the low profile and high profile stringer drives, I recall reading about this but I never knew the difference between them other than appearance.

The stringer drives may have had that so the engine could be put in flatter bottom boats because the engine oil pan would hit the hull before the drive was in the water far enough.<br />I couldn't imagine the manufacturer putting the wrong drive on, may have been replaced by a previous owner that didn't know what needed to be there.<br />It would be easy to check, just put the drive down and check where the cavitation plate sits in relation to the bottom of the boat. It should be nearly flush with the keel. If it's about 4" too high (10 cm) then you have the wrong drive.<br />I know very little about the stringer drives, Volvo used to make spacers for thier drives that could be added if needed doe engine clearance.

The shaft he is referring to is the waterpump drive shaft which is slightly longer in a high profile. My drive is a low profile with the short shaft. But it really does not affect the overall length of the stern drive i.e. an outboard<br /><br />Is that what you are referring to Berni?
