Hi Guys,

I'm brand new to this so appologies if I have posted in the wrong area

So my problem is that when I push in the small button in the center of the gear shift it gets stuck in.
Typically I would push it in so that you can rev the engine a little without the prop turning, for example when you first start and warm up the engine.
When this button is stuck in you cannot select any drive gear, effectively the boat is stuck in neutral.

I have tried wd 40 and crc ect but it feels like it is stuck in, that is not springy when you push it.

Any advice and comments would be greatly appreciated......Cheers

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,... Post a picture of yer Controller, it sounds like the spring broke,....

You'll no doubt need to take it apart to fix it,...

You'll have to take it apart. That round plastic cover at the bottom will pop off and then you can pull the button out. There's a spring behind it as bondo mentioned.

Hey thanks for all the advise.....so I popped the plastic button and beneath it is a plastic plunger which goes through a drilled hole in the s/steel bolt that holds the throttle lever mechanism on to the spline.
Once the s/steel bolt is removed the throttle lever is free to lift off the spline. At that point you can see, inside the spline, another plunger, which is the peice that goes into the main gear selector.
At that point I figured I might try and give it a small tug with a pair of long nose pliers, which I did, and it moved back and forth under spring load, which was encouraging.

By this time it was late in the day and still about 36 degrees celcius in the shade (Western Australia summer !!) so I then reassembled it all and it all seemed back to normal, that was it would engage forward and reverse gears until I pushed the button in and I was back to square one again........at this point I walked away and .....then drank some beer

Sounds like for whatever reason, that button is a little sticky. You can try replacing the spring as it may be worn out and not strong enough anymore, or the plastic plunger (white correct?) may be catching on something once it is depressed. Glad you dug in and saw how it all works.

I want to open mine and see how things look. Should all moving components be lubricated with lithium grease?

I am right where you are. Dis you get past the pin? How did that come apart? Did you find/replace a spring?

No it seems the pin is part of the moulded alloy gear case (if you will) that is in 2 halves, secured by clips and small bolts around the perimetre. I didnt go any further than that point. I am in a position now that the boat starts and runs fine, but if i need to depress the button in the center ie - to rev the engine whilst in nuetral, then I will not be able to re-engage the forward/reverse gears without stripping down the throttle lever, getting out the long nose pliers, and manually pulling out the internal button.

Thanks for info. I got to the gears too. My volvo penta shifter doesn't have parts. Had to buy new one for $222. Waiting for mechanic to install. Thanks again
