I quess its time for me to start my own resto project.Ive mostly been a observer on this forum, but I quess its time to join in and get my hands dirty.Im also tired of reading tinny rebuilds that lately seems to be storming this forum
Bought what I thaugt was a running sea ready boat 2 years ago,the seller actually told me that the block had cracked but it was fixed with a epoxy patch.Being ecstatic about buying a boat i put little effort in research and bought the boat.
After that it has just been a downhill for this boat starting with a 300e fine when picking it up.
It didnt take long before I found 3 cracks on the inside of the block, although the engine did not leak water to the oil i decided to replace it.Imported a reman longblock from the states along with new manifolds, full fwc kit from san juan and a list of parts making it "new".
I was about finished with the engine when I noticed the floor being a bit soft infront of the engine, and some cracks in the gelcoat.I actually made a topic about the transom and we concluded the reason being rot along with a bad design of the transom itself. The interior was supposed to be redone by a colleauge who suddenly disappeared with all the interior.
Got a bit disgusted with the idea about rebuilding the whole boat, the interior was just the last straw.I also got into a university I applied to which meant my income would come to a near zero,I covered the boat up and went to school and thats how it been for 2 years. The storms have ripped some holes to the cover so it has got wet,and the cover didnt allow for it to ventilate so it has just been very humid.
So I have thought it over and im going for a resto.I like how the boat looks and really want a boat for the summer months. It would also just feel like a defeat to part it out not to mention my economical losses.
The good part is that I have got a road legal trailer for it,it has a new engine, drive serviced and the electrical is redone.Ive also redone the cover for the boat.
I have done some investigation on the hull.
-The transom only has some rot at the bottom part, the wood at the drain plug was only painted to protect from moisture. But it obviuosly needs to be replaced completely.
-The stringers actually seem to be in quite good shape, all the test drills came out dry with solid wood.I found a dark colored spot in the wood(clear resin) at the gas tank area,so I have to inspect that further once I can remove the deck.
My plan is to remove the rear part of the stringers from the gastank to the transom, and only redo them along with the transom. This boat actually had 3.0 merc initially and was later replaced with a 4.3.The improvised engine mounts are not good and needs to be redone.I have decided to use nidabond for the transom.
-As the deck will be replaced I want to remove all the foam and replace it with 2k pu foam.Hopefully I can leave the floor in the cuddy alone, and just seam the old and new deck near the cuddy "wall"
-The boat has got some sort of impact on the port side that has made spider cracks. Those will obviously need to be ground and filled. There are some single cracks in the gelcoat that also needs to be fixed
-The engine room vents are gone. Some moron put a windshield viper on this boat that has left a hole in the cap
.Also I will remove the radio antenna as I dont need it.All these holes will need to be "rewalled".Dont worry I will redo the vents with a different style
-The screws that attach the rubrail are spinning, the wood behind them is slightly rotten.
-There is a small impact damage in the bow with exposed glass that needs to be redone
-The gelcoat is oxidized and very dirty. The boat had a very nice shine when I bought it so Im positive it can be polished with some elbow grease.
-I have absolutely no interior except for the cuddy.Im doing a big order from the states this spring and will be ordering 2 helm seats from veada, that price just cant be beaten.I have a template for the side covers so those will be easy to diy.Im thinking about doing the rear seating different, instead of having 2 seats and a engine box.I want to bring the seating a bit more fore and do a complete row.I will lose some floor space but overall I think its better. That way I can have a small sun pad behind the seats.
I dont like the grey color on the boat,so I will paint it red.
Its winter here right now,so cant really do much now.My plan is to bring the boat to a marina in april when the boats are put to water,I want a covered place so I can work even when it rains.I dont have so many lectures in the spring,so hopefully I can take some long weekends to work on the boat. When my summer semester starts in the middle of may I can hit full strive rebuilding the boat.I realize I wont get everything done by the summer, but it would mean the world if I could at least get the structural part ready and take it for a ride at the end of the summer. It would just give me inspiration and momentum to continue on this task. The boat hasnt even been in the frikkin water in my ownership.
And then on to some pictures
